Labelling an image is quite often useful, as is preparing text for ads, print displays and whatever else. PSP 7 can place text on the image either as just an image made up of a bunch of dots, or as a series of vector lines (which can be converted to a bunch of dots, later).

Text Menu

Most is self-explanatory. The standard text button turns off the stroke/foreground for the letters, so that no border is drawn around any letter. Upper right, the center text button is pressed, so that each line of text typed into the window, here, is centered with respect to the other separate lines. Bottom right, the auto-proof is on. That means the text shows up on the image as you type it in, here, and changes as you change things like the color, or Bold, or Kerning, and so on. The auto part is the little down arrow, and the proof button is the 'eye'. The OK button is being pressed in the picture, so the Hello World is put on the image in Baskerton at 20pitch in a dark blue color with no outline around the letters. And it's put there as a vector.

Along the bottom, then are four buttons - Vector, Selection, Floating, and Anti-Alias. The last is for a smooth looking edge on the text. Typically it's used, but for the smallest text (which might look better without it). Floating is the typical option. That puts the text down as a bitmap. But a selection doesn't draw anything except the outline, the 'marquee', which would surround the text if you used the selection tools. And the vector, as here, places the text as a vector object, not a bitmap.

The leading is the amount of space between lines, as you type them in, here. Even a change of plus or minus 2 or 3 can be noticeable. Kerning is the horizontal space between the letters. The auto-kern is preferable, since a lot of time goes into setting the space between letters in the font itself, by its designers. But sometimes, for effect, perhaps, you might want to space things out. Except for very large letters, though, the effect might not be as visually interesting as leaving it on auto-kern.
